With this image, I wanted to demonstrate the great grain of the cedar trees in Haida Gwaii, also referred to as the Queen Charlotte Islands. Here the members of the Haida Nation -- who are among the world's greatest carvers -- use it, to carve with great skill. The bear and cubs figure is one of 12 animal images carved on a pole at Skidegate, B.C. by Bill Reid, a Haida carver of international renown.
