This work depicts possibly the last moment of Col. Issac Ebey of Whidbey Island in 1857.
The Haidas of the Queen Charlottes came down in their great canoes to avenge the death of one of their Chiefs at Port Gamble. The moment of history might have been altered had it not been for Ebey's intransigence and dislike of the Indians. The Haida took his head and went home. The first two rows of men are living Haida, ancestors of those who participated in the raid on Whidbey.
